FSC Explained

Throughout this website and in our printed literature, you will find Halliday Funeral Supplies making reference to its status as a Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified company. We are proud of this status and we like to promote the FSC. So what is it all about?

“FSC is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide.”

“FSC certification ensures that products come from well managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.”

To achieve our certification, we must be able to prove that we buy our products from FSC certified suppliers. This needn’t be the forests themselves but any intermediary companies in the supply chain between us and the forests must also be FSC certified. Additionally, the total volume of any materials sold as FSC by a supplier, must not exceed the volume of any materials purchased by them as FSC. This process is known as Chain of Custody Certification. All the companies within the supply chain who provide us with FSC materials are audited annually, as are we. The audit ensures they are checking every delivery note and invoice coming and going out of the company for FSC credentials.

In addition to using the FSC tickmark tree logo, Halliday FS is also permitted to use the Rainforest Alliance seal. As a consumer you may notice this seal on a wide range of products in day-to-day life e.g. coffee or chocolate. The Rainforest Alliance is a founding member of the FSC and an FSC-accredited certifier. In fact, it has certified the greatest number of community and indigenous operations to FSC standards

So when families make enquiries to Funeral Directors, with environmental concerns forming part of their decision-making process, Halliday customers may confidently state that they are supplied by an FSC certified company. This is not the same as saying that all products supplied by us are FSC certified. The FSC sets very rigorous and demanding criteria that companies must meet before they describe a product as FSC certified.   Therefore Funeral Directors should take advice from us before speaking to families about the environmental credentials of individual products.

Halliday FS is the only company in our industry which can supply boards and coffins, so forgive us if we mention it wherever we can. We believe this fits with the ‘ethical’ strand of our motto – ‘Flexible, Ethical, Trusted.”
